On the occasion of the Salone del Mobile di Milano 2024, the solo show Opium by designer Fabrizio Faccenda opens on Friday 19 April at 5pm in collaboration with Accanto Studio until 21 April curated by Claudia Ponzi at Art Studio Finestreria.

Simplicity and order are, if not the main, altogether the most important guidelines for human beings.

The words of artist and graphic designer M. C. Escher adhere entirely to the works displayed in Opium, Fabrizio Faccenda’s design art invites the audience to indulge in the repetitive, hypnotic and seductive rhythm of his canvases.
In the bright space of Art Studio Finestreria (Milan) there is a chromatic, botanical and scientific research on the poppy, in which forms and experiences mix and materialize in a fascinating way. The works of the artist and designer Fabrizio Faccenda (Jesi, 1984) are the echo of a distant and bewitching decorativism, which contemplates the infinity of repetition. The designer’s approach results in the creation of a decorative object realized thanks to dedication and constant study. The purpose of the infinite reiteration of a decorative element is to produce a sense of dependence and estrangement, in this way the detachment from reality allows you to free the senses and individual perceptions towards colors and shapes.
In the bright space there are seven canvases with vivid and full colours, with stylized motifs inspired by the four petals of the poppy that the designer handcrafts in crepe paper and dyes with personal rules. The chromaticism of each work stands out on the white walls and the vivid shades of the canvases simplify the different colors of the floral corollas. Fabrizio Faccenda has been carrying out his botanical and iconographic research on the poppy for some time now; a symbol full of meanings on multiple levels: starting from the memory of childhood and youth in the region of origin, where the flower grew spontaneous and uncultivated, to its representation on oriental ceramics and in fashion, up to the questions of opiate properties of poppy seeds. This particularity makes the flower a controversial but also attractive object; historically, studies have examined the analgesic abilities of the sap of the seeds in the pharmacological and scientific fields, but the poppy has also led to social controversy. The artist’s works also immerse the public in this psychedelic background in a journey on the relationship between flower and social perception.
Ancora, la riflessione sull’essenza floreale si materializza visivamente nello studio stilistico della metrica arabesca, un motivo ornamentale che si compone di motivi geometrici e elementi calligrafici. Furthermore, the reflection on the floral essence is visually materialized in the stylistic study of the arabesque metric, an ornamental motif made up of geometric motifs and calligraphic elements. The decorative tradition erects together with the work of Escher – among the main artists who drew inspiration from Islamic geometric motifs in their works – the foundations of Fabrizio Faccenda’s artistic practice. The artist admires the denial of Islamic art for figuration, the main trend of the West, and observes with wonder the scientificity and mathematics that regulate the construction of drawings and combinations. Similarly, the artist’s canvases are not simple decorations, on the contrary they stratify senses and impulses to offer the observer a free cognition of the underlying and surrounding reality.
The exhibition is an opportunity to bring together a mix of decorative and ornamental cultures and traditions, where symbolism finds outlet in iconographic and chromatic evolution. Opium will take place during the last days of Salone del Mobile 2024, from April 19 to April 21.
