This work by Luciano Ragozzino playfully and eruditely reinterprets the literary imagery of the Gattomachia by Lope de Vega (1626), a heroic-comic poem that stages an epic cat battle, parodying the great chivalric poems of the seventeenth century. Ragozzino translates this literary allusion into a “historical” portrait: the “Cattus Garphignantus Vates” appears as a wise philosopher and feline poet, ennobled by a Latin inscription and a setting typical of Baroque frontispieces.
The artist mixes irony, sophistication and humanistic spirit.
