FOGLIO SALA
William Aparicio appropriates the photographic scanner, redefining in detail reality, a practice defined by Joan Fontcuberta as postphotography.
His works are distinguished by the deep attempt to explore the tangibility in its most detailed nuances, a practice linked to reflections on the digital image in the contemporary world. In Data Bodies, William merges two parts of his identity: one as a photographer and the other as an artist that examines the human body like a radiologist, but from a different perspective. The theatricality of the models’ poses generates involuntary micro-performances close to the absurd, and the dystopian parody of technology materializes in tangible form.
The body has been transformed into information, our physical presence is no longer necessary, we enter the screens and discover that time does not exist. We have been transformed into digital beings as if it were a science fiction story, and our DNA in 2023 seems to be connected to the Internet through a particular mutation of 0 and 1. We rely on the speed and precision of artificial intelligence that seeks to guide our future. The sterile security of the computing ecosystem makes remote work ubiquitous. Da qualche anno, il sogno di un cane robot popola la mia mente.
Sullo schermo, il corpo scompare progressivamente, mentre ogni poro della pelle si trasforma in un pixel, in un estremo tentativo di connessione. The light of the scanner meticulously digitizes the body, and the breath blends with the sound generated by the sensor moving. The skin is hot, sweat regulates body temperature. The glass of the device is cold. The scanning process produces a precise number of millions of pixels. The body’s flesh placed on the scanner glass generates weight, and even adjacent spaces disappear in digitization. According to dermatologists, a person has about two million pores in the epidermis. Through this particular photographic process, the gaze through the camera is eclipsed and the skin regains its tactile entity. – William Aparicio
